A policy is a named rule set the Decision Engine applies when evaluating a request. You can reuse a policy across placements and override the default by passing a policy name in the decision request.

  • Category rules: block categories such as gambling, alcohol or political content entirely, or allow them only on specific placements.
  • Advertiser approval: require that only approved advertisers are eligible.
  • Creative approval: require every creative to pass manual or automated review before going live.
  • Sponsor protection: block a sponsor's competitors on the relevant placements for the duration of a sponsorship.
  • Source restrictions: control which programmatic sources may be considered under each policy.

Fail-closed behavior

If a creative's category cannot be determined or its approval status is unknown, the Decision Engine treats it as ineligible. Uncertainty always resolves to not serving.
